Abstract

Urban poverty and its assessment vary according to time and setting. Generalisation is no easier in this field than in other avenues of social scientific inquiry. Our empirical studies in Costa Rica, however, in some cases suggest and in others reinforce a series of general conclusions widely applicable in Third World countries and possibly beyond.
