  • Michael Meyer

Abstract

Some innovations are so seemingly basic that it is difficult to imagine a time when they did not exist, like fire and the wheel. Ibsen’s contributions to drama are of this order. In brief, he was the first man to write a great tragedy in ordinary everyday prose, and the first to write a great tragedy about people called Mr and Mrs. Much besides, but consider these first.
