Summary
Cones of different cone angles were produced by spin-forging from commercially pure aluminium sheet using a roller having a specific profile to examine the effects of the process variables on the external surface finish of the formed cones.
The effects of mandrel speed and saddle feed rate on the mean centre-line average, Ra, value are significant in the low mandrel speed range. However, in the higher range of mandrel speeds the mean, Ra, values remain nearly constant and independent of saddle feed rate.
Actual mean values of centre-line average are compared with those predicted as “ideal” centre-line average values. For roller feeds/revolution of the mandrel greater than 500 um, the actual surface finish is better than that predicted for a metal removal process.
