Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to put in reasonable perspective the net economic benefits derived by the West, in comparison with those derived by the Soviet Union, in East-West trade generally. This takes us well beyond the central theme of this book, but it is necessary, so far as policy-making on technology transfer is concerned, to consider East-West trade in total. For reasons of space, the chapter is a tour d’horizon rather than an exposition. No quantificatory ambitions will be entertained here: the intention is merely to indicate some likely orders of magnitude.
