Abstract

On the morning of 26 June 1907, under an archway near the Sheldonian Theatre, two men in academic robes puffed on their cigars and reminisced, for as old friends who had not met for some years they had much to discuss. They became so engrossed, in fact, that they had to be summoned for the ceremony.
