Abstract
In May 1827 the nineteen-year-old proprietor of a little printing shop at 70 Washington Street, Boston, U.S.A., issued a small booklet entitled Tamerlane and Other Poems ‘By a Bostonian’. The booklet, bound in yellow tea-tinted paper covers, consisted of forty pages and contained eleven poems by an unknown author. The printer, Calvin F. S. Thomas, has since faded into obscurity — his sole title to fame being his name upon the title-page of this modest publication. Its author, on the other hand, has since become world famous as one of the greatest American writers and as one of the most potent influences on English and European literature.
