Abstract
Cancer research has benefited greatly during the past decade from the discovery of an athymic (nude) mutation in the mouse (Nomura et al., 1977). The discovery of an athymic mutation in the rat at the Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen, in 1953, and the subsequent establishment of a breeding colony at Carshalton, now provide an alternative and possibly more robust species for research purposes. This paper presents the results of experiments designed to assess the immune competence of the nude rat, with the aim of providing background information for scientists working in cancer research
