Abstract
Since the original observation by Rygaard and Povlsen (1969), extensive studies have demonstrated that human carcinomas, sarcomas, melanomas and neural tumours as well as Burkitt lymphoma-derived cell lines may grow and maintain their characteristics for prolonged periods of time in nude mice. A great many of these reports have drawn attention to the pseudo-benign behaviour for most of the human tumour xenografts with respect to local invasion and dissemination in the heterologous host. However, some exceptions to this consensus have been documented: they concerned various types of tumours following subcutaneous (s.c.) (Giovanella et al., 1974; Helson et al., 1975; Hata et al., 1978; Ueyama et al., 1978) or intraperitoneal (i.p.) grafting (Hirohashi et al., 1976; Takahashi et al., 1978; Kyriazis et al., 1978). In the latter studies, i.p. grafting induced a local carcinosis with invasion and metastasis.
