Abstract
On 2 May the commander of the Berlin garrison surrendered with 70,000 men. On the same day the unconditional surrender of the German forces in Italy came into effect. In Camp 21, Herbert Sulzbach undauntedly pursuing his re-education programme, invited a group of POWs to listen to the news on his wireless. Shortly afterwards, the German NCO who had switched on the set returned to his office to request protection. His fellow POWs were accusing him of collaboration and claiming that the BBC announcement was propaganda.
