Abstract
Christmas 1944, and the spirit of peace and goodwill towards all men was sadly lacking in the war-weary world. On 15 December, Hitler launched his last attempt to swing the war in Germany’s favour. Against all odds, he launched a massive attack on the Ardennes which was intended to precipitate another Dunkirk. Not until Christmas Eve could it be said with any certainty that the offensive had failed, and even then fighting did not cease for a further two weeks. To the POWs during this brief period, it seemed that at last the promised turn in the tide of German fortunes had arrived.
