Abstract
In May 1945, the month when the war ended, there were 199,550 German POWs in Great Britain. In the first half of 1946 their numbers rose dramatically (despite repatriation of the sick and the specialist), until in September they had reached a high point of 402,200. The Government had been true to its word: large consignments of POWs from overseas were being brought into Britain to swell the POW working force.
