Abstract

This odd, somewhat eccentric book, covers the well-trampled ground of British politics in the t 930s, upon which there is already an embarras, if not of richesses, at any rate of information.1 It is not the less interesting for that, though Mr Cowling did not have the advantage of the active experience of that deplorable decade, which might have provided a corrective to his views. As it is, his book is useful for the information it conveys regarding the politicians chiefly engaged. There are one or two surprises: Austen Chamberlain, with his experience of foreign affairs, comes well out of the sorry story. He was practically right on all the main issues — a pity he had no influence on his half-brother, as ignorant as he was obstinate about foreign affairs, who comes no better out of it than before.
