These two good books reflect on history, and conclusions we may draw from it, to some purpose: the first,1 on the patterns of Europe’s history, seen by an American who realises how much America belongs to it; the second,2 by a German whose exile and long residence in America have yielded him revealing insights into his homeland not given to many enclosed in it.
