Drug selectivity in the suppression of the immune response

  • Chapter
Book cover Drugs and Immune Responsiveness

Abstract

Chemotherapy is a relatively effective treatment for certain types of neoplastic diseases. In fact, by using drugs alone or in combination, good quality life can be prolonged and, in some cases, complete remission can be obtained with no evidence of the disease being found five years or more after diagnosis. These therapeutic results are obtained in patients with certain types of choriocarcinoma, Wilm’s tumour, Burkitt’s lymphoma, acute lymphocytic leukaemia and certain tumours of the skin. In the near future, chemotherapeutic treatments in conjunction with surgery may provide additional examples of therapeutic efficacy, as in the case of osteogenic sarcoma of the limb and of pre-menopausal breast tumours.
