Industrial Relations Research in Canada

  • Chapter

Abstract

A review of industrial relations research is complicated in Canada, as it is in the United States, by the lack of clear agreement on the parameters of industrial relations. While some scholars have an interdisciplinary approach to industrial relations as a field of study, others are involved in research impinging on various aspects of the subject from the perspective of a particular discipline, such as economics, law, history, political science, sociology, or psychology. Although this chapter will concentrate primarily on ‘mainstream’ industrial relations research, a major section will be devoted to labour and manpower economics. Research in the emerging fields of labour history and behavioural science will also be considered. Much of the relevant legal research will be covered in the section on public policy.
