Abstract
In 1953, in Germany, Prof. Karl Ziegler discovered a process for making a new type of high polymer that was recognised immediately as a material of great scientific interest and practical utility: linear, crystalline polyethylene. In the following year he made a solid polymer of propylene; however, he was anticipated in this discovery by Prof. Giulio Natta in Italy who independently discovered this remarkable new polymer: crystalline polypropylene. Natta conclusively proved the unprecedented regularity of its molecules and helical form of its crystals. In 1963, these two distinguished scientists shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for having jointly created the science of ‘regular’ polymers and stereospecific polymerisation.
