To their adherents all forms of religion appear reasonable. We may assume no one thinks himself unreasonable. But to the onlooker an air of irrationality hangs over all religion, and over some forms of it to an extreme degree. The best of religion gives the impression of a profound reflection on the nature of things. Yet the dedicated pursuit of reflection has often ended in the abandonment of religion.
