Socialist People’s Republic of Albania

  • Chapter
Marxist Governments

Abstract

Albania is the smallest of the socialist countries in Europe and the least economically developed. Geographically it occupies a strategically important position in Southern Europe, a fact that has played an important role in the history and development of the country. Ruled by the Ottoman Turks for almost 400 years from 1468, it gained independence in September 1912, only to become an Italian satellite after the First World War. Since the end of the Second World War the successive close relationships with Yugoslavia (1944–8), the Soviet Union (1946–60) and China (1961–78) reflect not only Albania’s inherent insecurity but also its importance.
