Abstract
I don’t think I have to labour the point that the twin problems of human rights and policy options for intergroup accommodation are today as important an international issue as the struggle for politicoeconomic ascendancy between the superpowers. In fact, in contemporary socio-scientific thinking these two issues are usually bracketed together as closely related dimensions of international behaviour. In virtually every country, human rights and policy options for intergroup accommodation are intimately tied up with the ideological cleavages that play such a vital role in the current international power struggle. In this context, it is self-evident that the theme of this conference is certainly germane to the special position of the Third World in the present world order.
This Introduction is based on Professor Rhoodie’s welcoming address delivered on the first day of the International Conference on Intergroup Accommodation in Plural Societies, Cape Town, 24 May 1977.
