Central Nervous System Involvement in Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia

  • Chapter
CNS Complications of Malignant Disease

Abstract

Involvement of the central nervous system is well-known as a cause of treatment failure in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, with an incidence of about 50 per cent before the introduction of prophylactic irradiation (West et al., 1972). This complication is also seen in adults with ALL and CNS prophylaxis has been incorporated into their management by most workers. The frequency of CNS leukaemia is less certain in acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) and there is no orthodox view upon its management, although it is probably becoming more frequent as remission rates rise and patients survive longer.
