Hypothalamic-Pituitary Function following Cranial Irradiation

  • Chapter
CNS Complications of Malignant Disease

Abstract

In this article we have attempted to review the significance of the early morphological and functional studies in animals following external irradiation to the hypothalamic-pituitary region. There have been an increasing number of reports of disturbed hypothalamic-pituitary function in man following such irradiation for various malignant conditions. We have assessed the contribution of these re ports to our understanding of the pathophysiology of radiation-induced hypothalamic and pituitary damage and, have proposed certain guidelines for the follow-up and treatment of such patients.
