Abstract
The New Machiavelli was written in the years 1908–9 but not published until January 1911. Wells intended it to be ‘a sort of companion piece to Tono-Bungay, as large and outspoken, but this time it is a picture of political life’.22 The comparison with Tono-Bungay clearly demonstrates that in planning The New Machiavelli Wells envisaged an ambitious novel which would offer a commentary upon political life in Edwardian England.
