Abstract
The Happy Turning was written in 1944 and published in February 1945. It is therefore contemporary with the unhappy Mind at the End of its Tether, but although Wells’s last two books were written at about the same time they are, in both mood and content, in the sharpest contrast. Whereas Mind at the End of its Tether holds out little, if any, hope for the future of mankind, The Happy Turning is suffused with cheerful optimism and ends on a note of forward- looking stoicism.
