Abstract

The ankle and foot are prime sources of difficulty in walking. This perhaps is not fully appreciated, judged by the vast literature devoted to problems of the hip and knee as compared with those of the foot. An assessment conducted at the London Hospital on a consecutive series of rheumatoid patients who had walking difficulties, demonstrated the following distribution of joints primarily responsible: hip, 2 per cent; knee, 53 per cent; ankle and hind-foot 20 per cent; fore-foot 25 per cent. Thus the ankle and foot together account for almost half the walking problems of the rheumatoid patient.
