Abstract

Finding the most economic way to distribute water from a set of reservoirs in order to satisfy the varying demands within a distribution area introduces the problem of optimisation. The reservoir manager is able to vary the withdrawal rates from the several reservoirs under his control so as to take into account the location of demand, pumping costs and the level of water in each reservoir. Automation, both in data collection and in control, is being introduced to help in running many of the newer and/or larger supply networks.
