Behavioral effects of naloxone and LSD

  • Chapter
Endorphins in Mental Health Research

Abstract

The etiology of schizophrenia is still unknown. A clinical single-blind investigation has shown that naloxone, a known pure opiate antagonist, given i.v. in small doses (0.4 mg), reversed hallucinatory behavior in schizophrenic patients (Gunne et al., 1977). This interesting study suggested that opiate-like mechanisms may be involved in schizophrenia.
