Abstract
The two peptides substance P and β-enkephalin are associated anatomically in many areas of the nervous system that are related to pain and analgesia. For example, β-enkephalin is present in interneurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord; substance Pis present in unmyelinated C-fiber sensory nerves which have terminals in the same regions of the spinal cord as the enkephalin terminals (Hökfelt et al., 1977). A third peptide, somatostatin, is also present in a separate population of C-fibers (Hökfelt et al., 1976).
