Release and inactivation of opioids in the guinea pig ileum

Endorphins in Mental Health Research

Abstract

The electrically stimulated myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle (MPLM) preparation is generally recognized as a reliable and sensitive bioassay for opiates and opiate-like peptides. We have recently demonstrated the release of endorphins from this preparation (Puig et al., 1977a) by using the same MPLM strip as both the source of endorphins and the bioassay to detect their opiate-like effects. We have also established the existence of cross-tolerance between the electrically induced release of endorphins and morphine (Puig et al., 1977b). Subsequently, we have studied the general characteristics of the endorphin release by investigating different parameters of electrical stimulation as well as the effects of other procedures.
