Coordinate synthesis and release of corticotropin and endorphin

  • Chapter
Endorphins in Mental Health Research

Abstract

In the course of studies on the biosynthesis of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) it was discovered that β-lipotropin (β-LPH) and β-endorphin [β-LPH61–91] share a common biosynthetic precursor with ACTH. These initial findings are summarized and more recent work on the coordinate synthesis and release of ACTH and endorphin is presented.
