Abstract
Another first night at the St. James’s which marked an epoch in the theatre was that of The Importance of Being Earnest.1 I was cast as the Hon. Gwendolen Fairfax, and I started rehearsals full of zeal and confidence. But alas! I soon found out how inadequate I was. The style of writing was entirely different from that of anything I had ever appeared in. The atmosphere was strange and I was terrified at my task. George Alexander was very kind but I think occasionally nervous as to whether he had been wise to trust this important part to me.
