Abstract
F1 hybrids are the first-generation offspring of a cross between any two inbred strains. They have many of the most valuable properties of inbred strains, but also differ in a number of important respects, and are widely used in research. The designation of F1 hybrids is covered in Chapter 2. It is worth noting that in describing a hybrid the female parent should always be given first.
