Abstract
When Isabel arrives in Italy James intends us to feel that her soul is blossoming in the presence of all the beauty that the country brings her; Italy is to be her deepest link with the world beyond herself and her own private life. How, then, does she respond to it? How substantially does James render it for her to respond to?
