Abstract
The most convenient method of controlling plant pathogens is through the use of resistant cultivars. Only when this avenue is absent or unsatisfactory are other techniques required. Husbandry methods are those most likely to be under the control of the grower and often these are practised in advance of a full scientific explanation for their effectiveness. Indeed the higher the standard of crop husbandry the lower is the likelihood that disease will be a problem in the crop. To rely solely on husbandry methods may, however, prevent the grower from maximising yield by, for example, shortening the growing season or requiring very extended rotations. Chemical control should be sought only when disease is apparent or occurs with such seasonal regularity that prior application of fungicidal materials may be used in the knowledge that without them there would be considerable crop losses.
