The drama surrounding changing form has fascinated writers in all ages. Homer describes the terrible adventures of Ulysses’ sailors in the palace of the enchantress Circe. By her exercise of magic she turns the sailors into pigs thus making their exterior conform to their hoggish disposition. Ulysses overpowers Circe and she promises to restore the sailors to human shape. When Ulysses is shown the swine in their sty he can see little difference between those that were hogs by birth and the twenty-two that were his sailors. Indeed the latter seemed to outdo the original swine in their own natural vocation. They wallowed in the dirtiest part of the sty.
