Role of Forebrain Commissures in Hemispheric Specialisation and Memory in Macaques

  • Chapter
Structure and Function of Cerebral Commissures

Abstract

The extensive work of Sperry (e.g., 1974) and his colleagues has dramatically emphasised the functional specialisation of the cerebral hemispheres in man, and the fact that interhemispheric integration of these unilaterally concentrated processes is normally achieved via the forebrain commissures. It seems possible, at present, that the initiating basis of this specialisation may somehow derive from the auditory system since: (a) it is the linguistic faculty that is most strikingly lateralised in man (Milner, 1974); (b) there is decisive evidence for equally strong lateralisation of learned song in canaries (Nottebohm, 1977); and (c) the only tentative suggestion of hemispheric specialisation in macaques, when normal bilateral sensory input is employed, is for analyses of auditory signals (Dewson, 1977).
