Diseases and Abnormalities of the Secundines

The incidence of this condition is approximately 1 in 1,000 pregnancies. It is characterized by the conversion of some or all of the chorionic villi into clear vesicles which show the following changes:
  1. (a)

    Excessive proliferation of the trophoblast in both syncytial and Langhans’ layers. This is the most characteristic change.

  2. (b)

    More or less complete absence of blood vessels within the villi.

  3. (c)

    Oedema of the stroma.
