When the Earl Spencer berthed at Sydney in October 1813, its consignment of convicts included one Richard Read who had been found guilty of having forged five pound notes in his possession and sentenced to fourteen years transportation. He was granted a ticket of leave on his arrival and soon began advertising as a history, portrait and miniature painter thus becoming the first professional portrait painter to practise in the colony.
