Thursday, April 8, [1915].… With all its many faults, Shanwalla1 is the best three-act play Lady Gregory has yet given us.… The drama was well acted, but Acts ii and iii fell flat after the high promise of Act i, but loud and continuous applause, with cries for author, followed the ending of the piece, and at last Lady Gregory appeared on the stage, attired in black with a mantilla of lace on her head … to bow her acknowledgement. Shanwalla is melodrama run to waste in a choking tangle of unnecessary words.
