It is hard to say what my object was in first taking up the idea of a native theater for native plays of the Irish. Probably my first idea was to make an opportunity for the production of the plays of William Butler Yeats, who helped to found the theater and who has provided the Abbey company with its most effective poetical plays. In the beginning, with crude scenery and little money, we started with English players but as the movement grew we hit upon the happy thought of employing only Irish actors, many of whom were peasants. In fact, we became a national institution almost by accident.
