Abstract

It goes without saying that Turgenev’s last days with Herzen in the summer of 1857 were not exclusively devoted to the affairs of their unhappy comrade. Among more fruitful subjects for discussion was the new broadsheet, Kolokol (The Bell), which Herzen and Ogaryov were about to bring out in support of Polyarnaya zvezda. Thanks to Turgenev’s enthusiasm for the Art Treasures Exhibition, Herzen soon went there, too; and one of his own helpful acts was to give Turgenev a letter of introduction to the historian Michelet. There were also sporting matters to be seen to. In addition to his own requirements, Turgenev had received an order from Tolstoy for a couple of English bitches. Doubtless he went to look for these at Lang’s, little knowing, perhaps, that Lang himself believed that Russian dogs were best. He further helped Nekrasov to commission a fantastic gun from Lang, and to choose a dog to go with it. Herzen, as before, was grudging executor of the final details; only this time his thankless task was performed in part for an enemy!
