Abstract

A magnetic field is the region around a magnet or a current-carrying conductor where the effects of the magnetic field can be detected. The field is detected by the mechanical force on iron filings, or on another magnet or on a current-carrying conductor. In some cases the magnetic field can be detected by sensing an e.m.f. which is induced in a coil of wire (mutual induction). We do not fully understand what a magnetic field is, and so we describe it as a condition of space.
