Abstract

Trade unionists often say that you should never believe what you read in the newspapers. This cynicism comes from a feeling that what is read in the newspapers or seen on the television is often not ‘like real life’. Even so, some trade unionists can still react sharply to the suggestion that news may not be neutral, even when presented with evidence that television news can distort reality. Often such evidence is felt to be threatening and is taken as an accusation of previous gullibility.
