If Marston failed to expound fully his aim in Sophonisba, at least he was able to keep the dramatic activity as a dominant partner in a theme-structure relationship. Although in the conclusion our sympathies are with Massinissa and our thoughts on the cruel picture Marston has drawn, we do acknowledge that Sophonisba followed a Neo-Platonic code of love, which emphasises that reason and necessity are superior to sensual indulgence.
