  • Michael Scott

Abstract

Many men of ‘wit’ have taken Sly at his word and censured the work, seeing in it an apparent disharmony in characterisation, structure and tone. They have claimed further that the problems and issues the play raises are incompatible with the levity found in the tragicomic form throughout and in the conclusion in particular.
