Abstract

“No one is so critical as a lover,” says Cockshut in his summary discussion of Trollope’s political novels,1 and this aptly characterizes the duality of their treatment of political themes. One satirizes to cure; loving the folly he mocks — or at the very least fascinated by it — Trollope shows how deeply he cares, how he reveres even as he slashes.

But Pope, like many ironists, loves the folly he mocks.

Reuben A. Brower

And like Pope … he belittles in order to magnify and magnifies to belittle.

A. O. J. Cockshut
