Special Gains from Trade with Socialist Countries: The Case of Tanzania

  • Manfred Bienefeld

Small countries must trade. Technologically backward countries must trade. Hence small technologically backward countries are doubly and critically dependent on trade. The reasons for this are well-known and often deemed obvious. A small country cannot produce all of its requirements as the complexity of its economy grows, and a technologically backward country has much to gain by obtaining access to more advanced technology. Unfortunately, like most simple truths this one needs qualification, and this paper will explore these qualifications in the light of the experience of one small, technologically backward country, Tanzania.
