Properties and function of the acetylcholine receptor of vertebrate skeletal muscle

Drug Action at the Molecular Level

Part of the book series: Biological Council ((BCSDA))

Abstract

The vertebrate neuromuscular junction — or motor endplate — has been par excellence a classical object for the study of impulse transmission controlled by a chemical synapse. An impressive history of electrophysiological and pharmaco-logical investigation has revealed the outline of the events involved in transmission there (Katz, 1966; Hubbard, 1974; Rang, 1974). The quantal release of ACh,* the activation of receptors by the transmitter, the depolarisation of the post-synaptic membrane and the triggering of the muscle membrane action potential are successive stages that have been elucidated, aided by the particular accessibility of this site to electrophysiological and pharmacological analysis. The underlying molecular determinants of the synaptic activity have not, however, yet been defined. The molecular biology of the functioning cholinergic synapse is still at an early stage.
