Abstract

A revolution has occurred in the past hundred years, brought about by the introduction of plastics materials, which are synthetic and man-made. Other materials, such as metal, wood and concrete, have been known for centuries, but plastics materials were widely produced for the first time only relatively recently, and are the fruits of modern science and technology.
