How It Is for Thomas Hardy

  • Lance St. John Butler

Abstract

We seem to be afraid of exercising in connection with literature the judgement that we exercise so freely in relation to life. We accept things from Dante and Herbert, from Dickens and Hafiz, that we would not take from our friends for a moment. We have developed a sort of doublethink whereby we somehow manage to avoid applying to literature the criteria we apply in every other sphere.
