Abstract

When Prince Philip passed through Saudi Arabia on a semi-private visit—ostensibly to prepare the ground. for a visit by his wife, Queen Elizabeth—the British Ambassador’s wife suddenly found out just what it means to be a female in this most devout of Muslim countries. John Wilton, the Ambassador, and his wife drove to Jeddah Airport to meet Prince Philip, but Saudi officials would not let her join the reception party or ride in their cars.
